Second Street American Bistro in Newport News

Was there for dinner on Dec 16. Was also staying in area last April and ate there 2 - 3 times. We were extremely happy with food and service was good in spring. However, this week the service was poor and they were unable to accommodate a simple request due to a dietary restriction. Ask for bread without butter. Long waits between seating and rest of meal. The hotess was the best part, a warm and friendly greeting. Would have to think hard before trying again. May have just gone downhill

This place is top notch! They don't have reservations except for large parties but they do have Call Ahead Seating. They offer so many mouth watering choices including gluten free items on the menu. They have an extensive wine list as well. The service is outstanding! You can't go wrong choosing Second Street!

I had the pleasure of dining at this awesome restaurant in March. My server was Anna and she was the absolute best! Her attention to detail, warmth and professionalism made my dining experience remarkable. The food is excellent as well as the ambiance. I strongly encourage anyone interested in great food, delicious cocktails and stellar customer service to visit this restaurant.

Melissa was great. She spoke to me about the dishes, was good on the beer and the wine served, and has adorable kids! We pictured shared our little ones! Clean bathrooms, friendly host(s), but my steak was over done. Asked medium and got medium well to well. Flavor was still good but it just wasn't a medium. The only ding I can give it to be fair. I will be returning for sure.

The service Alyssa provided complemented the excellent food. I especially loved the fixed price dinner which included a fantastic creme brulee for dessert.

We enjoyed the friendly staff. Our waitress and the manager were helpful and understanding when we had an issue with our order. We gave Second Street American Bistro a 4 rather than a 5, simply because the selection of seafood on the menu could be much better... But what we ate and the service we received was definitely 5 star! Thank you guys*** Merry Christmas!

Great food and great service. They are very welcoming as well. When we waled in they gave us fresh cookies. They were amazing. The manager walked around and made sure our visit was great. Our waitress got us everything we asked for super fast. I highly recommend the brunch menu!

Laura provided the most excellent service for us. I recommend the thai poppin shrimp and the carrot cake is a must for dessert!

This place is great, especially given some of the other choices in the area. Top notch seafood and meat, filling and large portions. We had a child with us, they were able to accommodate and had a kids menu but something about the ambiance just didn’t exactly scream family friendly. Some of the people were very well dressed, so definitely a great date night spot. Service was very prompt.

Enjoyed my evening at this restaurant. Great atmosphere and aura. The bar tender was able to mix up a pomegranate martini by request and it was excellent. My food was cooked to perfection as I had the Thai shrimp, which was my favorite🤗, salmon for my entree and bread pudding for dessert. Absolutely no complaints. My server was very attentive too.

In town for work and have been trying local spots. This place was fantastic. The servers were great, there was a ton of specials/happy hour selections and the food was perfect. Salmon came cooked spot on with great flavor. Presentation was perfect as well, see picture. Will definitely return next time I am in town and would recommend to anyone looking to have some great food.

Great restaurant with delicious food and cheap happy hour. They play games and have multiple TV's in the bar area. Very clean and has a great atmosphere. We always have great service here and the cheesecake was amazing!! Recommend for sure!!

It's been some time since I ate here. Had a business meeting over lunch. Seated, ordered, and food prepared quickly. Staff was beyond friendly and helpful. We're talking Chick-fil-A level friendly. Food was excellent. I'll be visiting more regularly.

We loved this hidden gem. Feels upscale bit the food is reasonably priced and delicious! Will definitely be back! Recommended to anyone in the area!

Service was great, atmosphere was great, and the reputation was great. But my meal was only O.K. I went because it was so highly recommend. I had the salmon burger, and pears. I love salmon and I love cooked pears. I will not order either again. I loved the atmosphere and I will try again. The pricing wasn't bad. The parking lot was very full and VERY Dark. The lighting is poor.

We were seated quickly. Our waitress gave us reasonably prompt service. We had no problems with the food. Our food came hot and we enjoyed it. They didn't have the beer that I wanted, but our drinks were great. If you want a quiet place on a Sunday to eat, try it.

Our waitress, Kellynn was super sweet and had a warm heart 💜 she was prompt, caring, and informative. We also noticed the manager how she was super helpful on the floor and made sure all the tables including us were in good spirits! The food was super BOMB too!!! Try the crab cakes

I always love Second but I notice 5 ladies walk in without a mask.

Service was really great, Haley provided excellent suggestions. My cocktail, the Raspberry Drop, turned out well and I really enjoyed my burger.

Nice place for dinner. Patio is very quaint. Drinks are good. Food is Americana-ish. Nothing outstanding but it’s clean and the food/drinks are above average. Service is great. Pricing is fair and drink specials are worth the afternoon visit. Check it out if you are in the area and want a nice place to have drinks before an event.

Food and atmosphere were great. We reserved a private dining room for 20 guests. They delivered everything they promised and went above and beyond what was expected.

The food. The service. All of it was top notch! The Thai Shrimp is incredible. The onion rings are devine. The cocktails were a delight! And while the food and drinks were great, Colin was the star. He really made the experience over the top awesome. Can't recommend this place enoigh!!

Always a wonderful experience. Staff is so attentive without being overwhelming. Food is always delicious. And the price is so affordable. Outside might make you think its highend but only the experience is.

I have been twice now; once for a late lunch and once for brunch. The garlic grilled cheese with fries were SO good. I cleaned my plate! For brunch, their waffles melted in my mouth but had crispy edges. Absolute perfection! And that's not even including their drinks. Their peach bellinis are PHENOMENAL.

I loved the atmosphere, the creative options, the service, and the presentation of the food. With a Tuscany vibe, it has a nice ambiance. The menu has classic American staples like burgers, but also offers more creative and original menu options as well. The presentation of the food was lovely and well plated. As far as the taste of the food though... it's hard to say.I got a veggie burger and was deeply disappointed. Honestly, it didnt taste bad. It was warm, creamy, comfort food that under the right name could have been good. But a goey glob risotto fried into a patti and placed between a bun is not what I want when I order a veggie burger. It's like sipping a glass of milk when you thought you had picked up a glass of coke. Neither are inherently wrong, it's just gross when you're not expecting it.

This place was amazing. The food was so yummy and the drink was on point. I loved the atmosphere!

My dad wanted meatloaf for his birthday. He enjoyed it and the shrimp appletizer. Friendly staff as well.

Great father's day brunch. The food was delicious, we had the fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, crab cake sandwich, rueben and tomato ham sandwich. Service was very good. We will be back.

I went here recently for a birthday dinner and was very disappointed. Half of the table ordered steaks medium rare and they came out well done, a result of them probably sitting in the window for too long. My mother had a salad but it was missing a lot of the ingredients that were listed on the menu. Our waiter rarely checked on us so half of us were just sitting around waiting to send our food back (with the price of the meal, we wanted what we paid for). After we got our steaks cooked correctly, we were ready for the check. There were extra charges for two people because they wanted french fries instead of mashed potatoes for the steak dinners and there was an extra charge for mushrooms on the steak, even though on the menu it said the steaks came with mushrooms! I have been to Second Street before, but this was an utterly disappointing experience for my birthday dinner. We will be going to the one in Williamsburg from now on.

This place was very very good. The staff was very nice and super helpful in helping me decide what food to get. Both selections they helped me choose were very good.The pork ribeye with greens and Mac & cheese were amazing, super tender, greens were cooked well with some spice to them. The chicken pasta was also good, very creamy and flavorful. Half of the chicken was a bit over cooked, the other half was cooked well.All in all, this is a place I will definitely go back to, and probably soon.

The customer service was first classfrom the hostess to our waitress. The decor and environment was very inviting, exciting and comfortable. The food was phenomenal and portions are adequate. I had the pork rib eye and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. I will definitely come back!

This is a great place all around. The staff and service are over the top. If you can go to happy hour or Sunday brunch, one will leave extremely happy. Get there early for happy hour if you want a bar seat.

This was my first time going and I enjoyed every minute of being there the atmosphere was great our waitress / bartender was very knowledgeable of the menu and help me out a whole lot can't wait to go back thank you for such a wonderful time.

My wife and I shared lunch from the lunch special menu: two courses for $10.99. You can choose soup, salad or dessert along with either an entree salad or sandwich. There were several great choices and the portions were huge! I had Grilled Romain salad with chicken and bread pudding for dessert. Faye had French onion soup and pimento cheese with chips. All dishes were excellent and presentation was superb. Service was unobtrusive but watchful. We each enjoyed our choices, rarely talking as we feasted. I shared the bread pudding and it was mouthwatering! Not overly sweet and sooo tasty. We will surely return. The food and service were sterling and there are several other dishes that we just have to try! Definitely the place to go for a special occasion!
